Telebehavioral Health is the provision of professional treatment of mental and substance abuse health conditions through the use of HIPAA-secure software over the internet. It is important to note that Telebehavioral Health is a mode of providing mental and substance abuse services and is not a separate service in an of itself. This mode of access may be utilized for all DSM-5 conditions and just about all types of services provided in-person for behavioral and mental health.

Providing telebehavioral health services requires that a combination of administrative, technological and physical controls and privacy practices be put in place. This is in compliance with the Healthcare Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). The software requirements for telebehavioral health will vary depending on the use case, setting, record integration and sharing requirements, and other factors.

Guidelines

REIMBURSEMENT

Medicaid, Medicare, and most third-party health insurance providers reimburse for telebehavioral health services. A growing number of states also require reimbursement for telebehavioral health services that are comparable to in-person services.
